What Your Nose Does All Day

Most people think of the nose as a hole in the face that air goes through. It is closer to a piece of climate-control equipment that runs continuously, without instructions, for your entire life.

Here is what it is doing while you are not paying attention.

It conditions somewhere around 10,000 litres of air a day

That is roughly 2,600 gallons, and almost none of it arrives in a state your lungs would enjoy. Air comes in cold, dry, and full of whatever is floating around the room.

By the time that air has travelled the few inches from your nostril to the back of your throat, it has been warmed to close to body temperature and humidified to close to saturation. A few inches. That is the whole runway your nose gets, and it works in both directions — in a heated office in January and in dry air-conditioned air in August.

It has shelves

Inside each side of your nose are three curved ridges of bone covered in soft tissue, called turbinates. They look like shelves and they work like baffles. Instead of letting air run straight through an open tube, they break it into turbulent flow and force it across a much larger surface area.

More surface contact means faster warming, faster humidifying, and more chance for larger airborne particles to land somewhere other than your lungs.

It produces close to a litre of mucus a day

Which sounds alarming until you realise you swallow nearly all of it without noticing.

Nasal mucus is not waste. It is a thin moving blanket that keeps the tissue underneath damp and catches particles on the way past. Underneath it sit millions of microscopic hairs called cilia, beating about a dozen times a second, always in the same direction — backwards, toward the throat.

The effect is a slow conveyor belt. The whole blanket gets moved along and replaced roughly every fifteen minutes, all day, every day, whether you are awake or asleep.

It switches nostrils on you

Right now, one of your nostrils is doing more work than the other. Tissue on one side is slightly swollen while the other side runs open, and in a few hours they will quietly trade places. This is called the nasal cycle, and most people go their whole lives without noticing it.

The leading explanation is rest rotation: one side handles the bulk of the conditioning work while the other recovers its moisture.

It does most of the tasting

Your tongue handles five basic tastes. Nearly everything else you think of as flavour — coffee, strawberry, basil, the smell of rain on pavement — is your nose, working through roughly 400 different types of receptor in a patch of tissue at the top of the nasal cavity.

It is the reason food goes flat when your nose is blocked. The tongue is fine. The interesting half of the equipment is offline.

It makes nitric oxide

The sinuses around your nose produce nitric oxide continuously, and it travels down with the air you breathe. It is a signalling molecule, involved in how blood vessels and airways adjust themselves, and it is one of the reasons the nasal cavity is a genuinely interesting piece of biology rather than a tube.
