Can You Use Expired Nasal Spray? Expiry Dates, Storage and How to Check Your Bottle
By Udi Damari on Mar 05, 2024 0 CommentThe most common question we get about nasal sprays has nothing to do with how they work: can you use one after the expiry date? Short answer: it is not recommended. Here is what the date means, how storage affects it, and how to check the bottle you have.
Can you use expired nasal spray?
The printed date is the point up to which the manufacturer stands behind the product's quality when it has been stored correctly. After that, no one is guaranteeing anything: preservatives can lose their effectiveness, ingredients can degrade, and the sprayer may no longer deliver a consistent dose. For something that goes into your nose, that is reason enough to replace it. If in doubt, a pharmacist can look at the bottle with you.
Two dates, and the earlier one wins
For NOWONDER™ (also known as Enovid) there are two clocks:
- The printed "Best Used By" date on the sprayer and carton — the shelf life of an unopened bottle.
- Six months from first opening — the in-use life once the two-chamber system has been primed.
Whichever comes first is the one that counts. A light user will usually hit the six-month mark before the bottle runs out. Full arithmetic in How Long Does One Bottle Last?
How to check the bottle you have
- Look on the sprayer body and the carton for the "Best Used By" date.
- If you have opened it, count six months from the day you first primed it.
- Look at the liquid: it should be clear, with no unusual smell or change in consistency.
- Prime it. If it will not produce a consistent spray after several presses, do not use it.
When you buy from BuyEnov, the expiry of current stock is always shown on the product page before you order, so you know what you are getting.
What shortens a nasal spray's life
- Heat — car dashboards, radiators, sunny windowsills.
- Cold — freezing damages the formulation. Do not refrigerate NOWONDER™.
- Moisture — a steamy bathroom cabinet is not ideal.
- Light — keep it in the carton or a drawer.
How to store it properly
Room temperature — roughly 59–86°F (15–30°C) — in a dry place, out of direct sunlight and away from heat. Do not freeze and do not refrigerate. Storage detail in How should I store it? and What if it freezes or gets hot?
Signs a nasal spray has gone off
- An unpleasant or unusual smell.
- Discoloured or cloudy liquid, or a change in consistency.
- A sprayer that no longer delivers a consistent spray after priming.
Disposing of an expired bottle
NOWONDER™ is a cosmetic product, so an expired bottle can go in household waste according to your local rules. Empty the remaining liquid down the drain if your local guidance allows, and recycle the carton. If you are unsure, your local waste service or pharmacy can advise.
Replacing it
If your bottle is past its date, or past six months open, replace it. Every pack size is on the shop page with current expiry shown, and larger packs cost less per bottle — unopened bottles keep to their printed date, so buying ahead is fine as long as the date covers it.
